Spotify Blend: Music in a Mixer
Do you find yourself struggling to show off your music taste to someone new? Well, Spotify’s newest feature is Blend can help you do just that. Blend is a tool that mixes the music tastes of two people into one playlist.
This feature is still in beta and not available to everyone at the moment, but it is easy to check if you do or do not have access. Currently, Blend is only available on the mobile app. In the app, select the search bar, type in “Daily Mix,” select “Your Daily Mix” Genre, and if Blend is available to you, select “Create a Blend.” From there, invite one friend at a time to create a Blend. How exciting!
Each Blend is like any other Spotify playlist, except you can see which songs in the playlist come from your listening habits or your friend’s. Since everyone’s listening evolves over time, the playlists continuously update and each one consists of three to four hours of music.
I found some old songs that I don’t listen to anymore popped up on my playlists, but it seemed the algorithm placed them so the person I was sharing my playlist with could associate with those songs.
If you want to have a varied Blend, you and the person you are Blending with must have differing music tastes. Likewise, a fruit smoothie is only as diverse as its ingredients.
Anyone on a first date or simply wanting to get to know someone better should use this feature. It’s practical, especially if you and a friend have trouble vibing with each other’s music and need to find some common ground.
Blend is still in beta, so there is room for improvements. Users should have the ability to “like” or “dislike” tracks and remove the songs in a Blend so the curated selections can better represent the users. Once Spotify can perfect the two-person blend then the streaming giant should implement multi-user blends.
Still, it’s worth checking out for those needing a unique Spotify fix.
