Weezer’s newest single is the beginning of a big year for the band
Rock band Weezer released the first single “All My Favorite Songs,” after surprisingly announcing then releasing a new album on January 29th. The album, which has 12 tracks on it, is called “OK Human” which seems to be a commentary of today’s technology-filled world and perhaps a rebuttal to Radiohead’s 1997 album “OK Computer.”
The single itself was released on January 21st, with an accompanying music video. The music video clearly supports this theme surrounding technology’s grasp on society. It follows the internet traction of a Weezer song being released and a young boy trying to befriend a girl over the internet.
The music video uses a social media platform called OK Human Friends, which the band created as a website for fans to use as well. It has two “posts” from Rivers Cuomo and Brian Bell that show insight of the production of the album in the studio. Fans can also join a waitlist to sign up for Weezer updates.
The song itself was pretty repetitive, especially with its lyrics, which gives it more of a simplistic pop song vibe. One thing that does it spice up, however, is the orchestral instruments in the background. This is something that doesn’t isn’t very common amongst Weezer’s more alternative music style.
The band explained over social media that they worked with a 38 piece orchestra to try and avoid most computer technology while making the album.
“We used our instruments to connect to the 1960’s and 1970’s and, with the orchestra, back to the 18th and 19th centuries. We had no click track or loops or hi-tech sounds. Not even an electric guitar,” they tweeted.
Although Rivers Cuomo, the band’s lead, has a very distinctive and unique sound to his voice and style of singing, parts of the song sound like Ezra Koenig from Vampire Weekend. The bridge especially seems to remind me of their song “Step.” They are two completely different songs with different vibes but somehow they are also incredibly alike.
Last May, Weezer released the single “Hero” which is set to be off their next album (yes, they have a second album coming out this year) which will drop May 7, 2021.
