Small town band to state-wide hit: Margot Sinclair

Margot Sinclair is a five-member indie-rock band originally from San Luis Obispo that has grown to become both a local and worldwide hit on music streaming platforms.
When it comes to describing their music in one sentence, lead singer Kyle Mix summed it up.
“Music that you want to sing to, you want to dance to and it’s stupidly stuck in your head,” he said.
Guitarist Carson Baer said that the group’s songwriting process is key to their seamless collaboration.
“Luke will add his additional guitar part, Owen will write his bass line and then Phil throws the groove down,” Baer said. “Then we’ll get that solidified.”
When it comes to music composition, lyrics are typically written last, with each phrase acting as a finishing detail to the equation. Mix listens to the beats the band creates and mumbles whatever comes to mind as he reaches to find the right words.
“Yeah, it very much starts with one person and then everyone kind of individually writes their own parts,” Mix said. “There’s no one person writing everything.”
Margot Sinclair’s songs can come to life in a time frame ranging from one night to a couple of weeks. As for their live performances, the band tends to cover songs from artists who inspire them.

“At first, we used to cover a lot of songs that we really just enjoyed because they’re songs that inspired us,” Mix said. “And then we realized it’s way more fun to cover songs that are not similar to who we are as a band and kind of make them our own.”
After a successful year of new releases and a performance at the San Luis Obispo Music and Arts festival “Shabang,” the five-piece performed live at Libertine Brewery in January, debuting their new single “Elizabeth of Bohemia.”
With the help of their manager and producers, the band is moving in an uphill direction toward success.
“It seems like now the most exciting thing is doors keep opening ahead of us, and we just have had continuous forward progress since last year,” Baer said. “It doesn’t seem like it’s really going to end anytime soon, which is very exciting.”
With hopes of potentially touring in the near future, Mix said that some of the various countries worldwide that stream their music are Germany, France, the Netherlands, Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico, the Philippines, Belgium, Sweden, Italy, Spain, Ireland and Argentina.
From starting as a small garage band in San Luis Obispo to performing at live events statewide, they are excited for what the future of Margot Sinclair holds.
“There is more to come soon, so stay tuned, San Luis Obispo,” Baer said.
