Fifth annual Comix Fair brings local comic lovers and artists together
The San Luis Obispo Public Library transformed into a hub of creativity for its fifth annual Comix Fair on Oct.11, an event celebrating comic book culture and connecting local artists with the community.
Families, students and comic fans of all ages filled the library for a day of art, costumes, and storytelling. The event featured comic-making workshops, face painting and a costume contest that brought out characters from across the multiverse.
Local cartoonist Raymond Mullikin was one of several artists featured at the fair. He spent the day turning visitors’ names into cartoon characters– a skill he’s been practicing since childhood.
“I might think, ‘Oh, that might look like eyeballs, and maybe underneath that might be a nose or a mouth,’” Mullikin said. “Once I see it, I’ll turn it into a character.”
Organizers say the fair started as a way to celebrate comic book culture and has grown into a creative tradition. It also offers a space for local artists to share their work and connect with the public. The event’s organizer, Seth Romera, looks forward to this every year.
“My favorite part is spending time with the artists, seeing the presentations, and watching kids have fun,” Romera said. “Every year we try new things to make the fair a little different.”
Much of the fair’s success comes from community partnerships. Local shop Doctor Cain’s Comics has played a key role in helping the library connect with artists across the Central Coast, expanding the fair’s reach each year.
For some artists, it’s an opportunity to inspire others.
“It’s mostly about promoting creativity,” said Eamon Winkle, a first-time participant. “If my work makes someone want to try it themselves, that’s what it’s all about.”
Families like Missy Ratt and her granddaughter found the event gives them a chance to spend time together and explore their creativity.
“We get to play together every Saturday, and we’re always looking for fun activities to do,” Ratt said. “My granddaughter’s been interested in writing comics for a while.”
After five years, the Comix Fair continues to grow and bring together artists, fans and families through a shared love of storytelling and imagination.
