SLO Concert Guide – Spring 2019
Along with sunshine and beautiful wildflowers, an amazing and jam-packed lineup of concerts has been bestowed upon San Luis Obispo this spring.
From rap, to EDM, to lo-fi indie, this season has something to offer to music lovers of all tastes and fancies.
Keep in mind this is not a comprehensive list, but some of the highlights you won’t want to miss.
Mt. Joy
April 4th, 7:00 p.m.
SLO Brew Rock Event Center
With origins in both Los Angeles and Philadelphia, the folk-rock group Mt. Joy will kick off the beginning of springtime shows in SLO. Some of their popular songs like “Silver Lining,” “Astrovan,” and “Sheep” have a sound comparable to Houndmouth or Rainbow Kitten Surprise. Be sure to check out Mt. Joy if you are into indie rock and folksy tunes.
KCPR Presents: Club 91
April 6th, 8:30 p.m.
Bang the Drum Brewery (18+)
Club 91 is an electronic music club and weekly radio show that can be heard on KCPR 91.3 FM Tuesday-Friday 8 p.m.-10 p.m. It can be described as a community platform that strives to share the best in underground dance music. This is one of several events where they will be mixing fun and groovy music.
Murs
April 7th, 7:00 p.m.
The Siren (21+)
South Central, LA born rapper will be making an appearance in the central coast to share some of his rhythmic prose. He was once part of a popular group, Living Legends, and his solo career has been just as impressive. Murs has mastered the art of delivering heavy messages through beautifully worded rhymes as seen in “Animal Style” and “First Love.” This rapper no doubt will impress you with his thoughtfulness and awareness of the world around him.
Still Woozy
April 9th, 7:00 p.m.
SLO Brew Rock Event Center
Sven Gamsky, better known from Still Woozy (the name of his solo project), is a talented artist who makes music out of his garage in Oakland, California. He has a laid back sound similar to Gus Dapperton or Yellow Days. With great songs like “Goodie Bag” and “Cooks” this performance is perfect for you if you’re needing to mellow out.
Unknown Mortal Orchestra
April 13th, 7:30 p.m.
Fremont Theater
Their past sound could be best described as a mixture of dreamy disco and psychedelic folk. Based out of Portland, Oregon and originally from New Zealand, this group is known for some popular songs like “So Good at Being in Trouble” and “Multi-Love.” Following the release of their latest instrumental album IC-01 Hanoi last year, this show is definitely worth going to if you are already familiar with the band’s sound and want to experience a completely different side of them.
Bob Moses
April 15th, 8:00 p.m.
Fremont Theater
Bob Moses is an electronic duo originally from Canada. Their sound is comparable to that of Christian Löffler or Paul Kalkbrenner. With dance-floor ready songs like “Tearing Me Up” and “All I Want” this show is right for anyone looking to bust a move!
Zedd
April 16th, 5:00 p.m.
Avila Beach
This electro-house musician will be performing at an outdoor venue in Avila. It will be another surely must see event based on Zedd’s large fan base and popularity. If you love to dance and have extreme FOMO, definitely buy your tickets now!
Superorganism
April 18th, 8:00 p.m.
Fremont Theater
This colorful and eccentric London based group is upbeat and relatively new on the map. They are an eight member electro-pop band with their first album only recently released in 2018. Be sure to check them out if you want to claim you knew about them before they reached mega-stardom.
Earl Sweatshirt
April 21st, 8:30 p.m.
Fremont Theater
Earl Sweatshirt is an artist arguably not in need of any introduction or description. He is a member of Odd Future and has also had an impressive solo career. He will surely deliver an enjoyable and memorable performance worth seeing.
KCPR Presents: SALES
April 24th, 7:00 p.m.
SLO Brew Rock Event Center
This American pop duo of longtime friends Lauren Morgan and Jordan Shih creates lo-fi and cheerful music. If you like Frankie Cosmos or Men I Trust, SALES will also surely strike your fancy!
KCPR Presents: Club 91 Luna Noche
April 26th
Luna Red
Luna Red is no stranger to club nights and has been a forgotten corner stone of the San Luis Obispo electronic club scene. This spring the Luna Noche weekly party series surfaces, showcasing the best in electronic music around the community. Be sure to check this event out if you want to move your feet.
Chicano Batman
April 28th, 7:00 p.m.
Fremont Theater
The members of Chicano Batman will be gracing SLO with their presence yet again this April. They’ve recently dropped two new singles, so this will be a great show for fans to check out. They blend together a variety of different music genres like soul, tropicalia, and psychedelic rock. For an upbeat, psychedelic journey, you’ll want to be at this show.
Beach House
April 30th, 6:00 p.m.
Alex Madonna Expo Center
This American duo encapsulates what is means to be dream pop. Their ethereal vocals and soft sound will mellow you out. If you haven’t heard them before, some of their more popular songs include “Space Song” and “Myth” and their sound is akin to Grizzly Bear and Beach Fossils. This show is sure to transport you into another dimension, so it’s worth the look if that is what you’re into.
Shabang
May 4th, 12pm-10pm
Laguna Lake
Shabang, a live music and arts festival, is one of the many reasons why San Luis Obispo is such a special place. It is a festival without flashy headliners or crazy crowds that fosters a love of music and creativity. It an experience unique to SLO and definitely something that everyone who lives here needs to attend at least once.
STRFKR
May 8th, 8:00 p.m.
Fremont Theater
This electronic style group based out of Portland, Oregon has been making music since 2007. STRFKR’s performance will not only include their upbeat and dancy hits, but also their homemade light show! This indie rock band will no doubt deliver a fun and lively show.
Mac Demarco
May 22nd, 6:00 p.m.
Alex Madonna Expo Center
This event is surely going to be one of the most popular events this quarter. The timing of this show coincides almost perfectly with the scheduled release of his new album “Here Comes the Cowboy.” With the release date being May 10th, listeners are left with the perfect amount of time to familiarize themselves with their new tunes from the lovable indie-rock icon before hearing them performed live.
The Frights
May 23rd, 8:00 p.m.
Fremont Theater
With a sound that could be described as surf rock or garage punk this four-membered band is sure to provide an uplifting and energetic performance. They are a fun and fiery band who will undoubtedly deliver passion in their performance. If you haven’t heard them before, they’re comparable to the Growlers and Vundabar.
Real Estate
June 6th, 7:00 p.m.
SLO Brew Rock Event Center
This lo-fi group based out of Brooklyn, New York has been making chill out music since 2008. They started out as high school friends messing around with music and even had a brief stint as a Weezer cover band. Their sense of camaraderie and enjoyment is not lost in their sound. This show will leave you with a smile on your face.
Be sure to take advantage of everything SLO has to offer in the realm of music this quarter. The sun is out and you should be too!
