SEM Summit showcases Cal Poly’s enrollment strategies
On Dec. 4, Cal Poly’s Office of Institutional Research and Office of Data Management hosted a Strategic Enrollment Management (SEM) Summit. According to the Cal Poly Report, the goal of the SEM Summit was to inform the campus community, specifically staff, about new strategic enrollment initiatives and to answer questions.
Terrance Harris, the Vice President of Strategic Enrollment Management, believes the SEM Summit is a great collaboration and learning opportunity.
“It’s really more of, kind of the nuts and bolts of some of the things that take place and how we as colleagues across campus can interact in a way that helps positively affect the work that we do on behalf of the students that we serve,” he said.
The event was held from 8:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center (PAC) using the Pavilion, Lobby, Gallery and Founders Room. The Summit included a free lunch hour with Mr. Pickles provided for those who registered. The event was mainly attended by staff, both administrative members and educators.
Ali Burnett, Senior Director of Gift Planning at Cal Poly for University Development and Alumni Engagement, thought the event gave her some great insights.
“I’m specifically here to hear how we are supporting students and how we can better support students,” said Burnett. “Hearing opening remarks about the progress that we’ve made in terms of our student enrollment as well as retention has been wonderful.”
SEM Summit’s breakout sessions included presentations from various departments on campus, according to the online schedule. This included the Office of Recruitment/Admissions, the Office of the Registrar, Institutional Research and the Office of Data Management.
“It’s a joy to put it together. It’s great to get to see our colleagues. It’s great to get to help people, help themselves,” said Harris. “You know, it’s great to be able to get feedback that ultimately helps us achieve our goals, which is student success.”
Although the next SEM Summit has not yet been announced, last school year there was one held at the ends of fall and winter quarters.
