Record Store Day KCPR Staff Selections: Moises De La Cruz
“Prospect Hummer” – Animal Collective
This 4-track EP, which features the serene vocals of Vashti Bunyan over autumnal folk production, is getting a red and yellow “starburst” 12” pressing for RSD. If a more laid back and daydreamy vibe suits your record collection, this 2005 release comes highly recommended.
“The Soft Bulletin Companion” – The Flaming Lips
1999’s “The Soft Bulletin” is among the Flaming Lips’ greatest artistic achievements and is being rereleased on 2 silver discs with a wealth of bonus promo content, including unreleased songs, demos, B-sides, and even a few tracks from their controversial multi-disc album “Zaireeka.”
“Can I Believe You” / “Wading in Waist-High Water” – Fleet Foxes
After dropping one of the pandemic’s cleanest releases, Fleet Foxes performed a few cuts live with the Resistance Revival Chorus. Fittingly recorded in Brooklyn’s St. Ann & the Holy Trinity Church, the lush and pastoral performance is getting its first release on a 7” for RSD this year.
“Drawn and Quartered” – Oneohtrix Point Never
For listeners who found themselves intrigued by the mysterious producer who is co-credited on The Weeknd’s “After Hours” and had to hear more of his work, a number of Oneohtrix’s early ambient and experimental albums are getting new vinyl releases this year. “Drawn and Quartered” is both a perfect sampler and a great addition to a growing collection. It is being pressed in off-white vinyl.
“Fantastic Vol. II” – Slum Village
This cornerstone in the rich production career of J Dilla is being re-released for its 20th anniversary on a “golden pearl splatter” vinyl. Featuring breezy beats and some of Slum Village’s finest rhymes, “Fantastic Vol. II” is a must-own for fans of golden age hip-hop.
