New Music Monday: September 21, 2020
Each week the content writers for KCPR.org are going to publish a playlist containing a new song recommendation from each of them.
1. Out in the World – GUM

My favorite album released during quarantine came from Jay Watson’s (Tame Impala, Pond) personal project GUM. Out in the World captures the groove and eclectic feel the summer would have brought if our sanity was not wrecked by the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s a great listen for those who enjoy a little sprinkle of everything in their music.
2. Flowers of Neptune 6 – The Flaming Lips
Recommended by: Sophia Pattison
I got into The Flaming Lips a lot more over quarantine and they just released a new album last week. This is my favorite song off the album. It is a very easy and relaxing listen but is not even close to boring.
3. Thirteen – Bedouine, Waxahatchee, Hurray for the Riff Raff
Recommended by: Kallie Kidder
This is a very recently released cover of Big Star’s song from 1972. It is a beautiful female trio, one of my favorite’s alongside Mountain Man, Haim, and boygenius.
4. Take You to Hell – Ava Max
Recommended by: Jenna McCarthy
The album “Heaven vs Hell” was released on Friday, September 18th, and this is my favorite song off of it. Stay tuned for a review on the full album!
5. Thinkin’ Bout Love – Wild Rivers
Recommended by: Gracie Walter
This has been my favorite song for the past few weeks. I discovered it on Wild River’s EP “Songs to Break Up To” (released during quarantine) in May, however I believe it was released as a single in the winter. This song gives me the strongest feeling of nostalgia and is definitely worth the listen.
6. BS – Still Woozy
Recommended by: Jennifer Newton
This is a new song that Still Woozy released about a week ago. It’s a very calm song from the beat and the lyrics are very catchy. I think it’s that good mix of indie and also pop and it lowkey reminds me of Omar Apollo.
7. I Wish I Had – Josiah Johnson
Recommended by: Alice Sukhostavskiy
This is a song from the new album Josiah Johnson just released, who used to be in The Head and The Heart. It has indie vibes and is definitely one of my favorite songs on the album.
8. Slow Dance – Saint Motel

On Friday September 18, Saint Motel released “The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack: Part 2” and “Slow Dance” is one of five tracks on the EP. The song has the classic up-beat, feel-good dance sound and iconic emphasized piano that the band is known for. Another reason this track stood out to me, was the fact that it is a love song (just read the lyrics), however it strays away from the sound of a traditional love ballad.
9. Tigersharks – Sumbuck
Recommended by: Jonathan Crespin
You know those mornings when you get up and it’s really foggy outside? So you get up, make a hot cup of coffee, put on a comfy sweater, and just listen to some music for a bit? “Foggy day” music is what the music of folk artist Sumbuck embodies. I love this album, Tigersharks in particular, because even though it is foggy day music, there is a song on this album for any day and the music just puts a smile on your face.
10. End of Daze – Spillage Village
Recommended by: Lilly Leif
This is the first single from Spillage Village’s upcoming album “Spilligion,” and this track features some standout verses from JID and Mereba that encapsulate the seeming end of times we are currently grappling with in society. This song definitely resonates with the younger generation trying to navigate how to fix the issues we are faced with.
11. Sweet – GRiZ

GRiZ has just released a new full album this past week titled “Chasing the Golden Hour, Pt.3” and it is a great compilation of funky, groovy, and vibey songs. The album features a variety of songs with smooth jazz intertwined with some electronic production. My favorite song on the album was Solo featuring ProbCause, but I would definitely recommend checking the rest of the album out.
