New Music Monday: November 30 (Finals Week)
1. Chinatown – Bleachers (ft. Bruce Springsteen)
Recommended by: Tessa Hughes
This is Bleacher’s first single in two years and they are returning with a bang. I mean, how could you not when the song features none other than “The Boss” himself? Jack Antonoff’s voice couples very nicely with Springsteen’s. The track carries a very similar sound to past Bleachers’ hits but Springsteens’ vocals give it a new edge, making it a quality stand alone hit.
2. Shameika Said – Shameika (ft. Fiona Apple)
Recommended by: Kallie Kidder
This past April, Fiona Apple released her track “Shameika” on her highly praised album “Fetch the Bolt Cutters.” The song discusses her experience in grade school and an inspiring classmate, Shameika, who helped her stand up to bullies. Shameika, more formally Shameika Stepney, is a rapper and the two musicians decided to reunite for this brand new single.
3. Hate Me – Miley Cyrus
Recommended by: Lilly Leif
This is one of the best tracks from Cyrus’s new album “Plastic Hearts” and touches on Miley’s perception of negative criticism asking the question of what would happen if she were to die.
4. Fue Mejor – Kali Uchis ft. PARTYNEXTDOOR
Recommended by: Jennifer Newton
After her successful album “Isolation” in 2018, Kali Uchis has retuned this time with her album “Sin Miedo.” Her album was released on November 18th, 2020 and written fully in Spanish (other than the people who are featured on her album). Each song has a great beat and can get anybody energized, even if they may not know what she’s saying.
5. PAIN – King Princess
Recommended by: Sophia Pattison
This energetic song is the second single from King Princess this month. It has a strong and hard-to-miss bass line that carries the track. The lyrics talk about the pain that comes with love, which is somewhat of a darker subject for a more jumpy song.
6. Caroline – Arlo Parks
Recommended by: Jenna McCarthy
This song is very chill and makes me feel comforted and calm. Parks’ voice is unique, and while she tells the story of a girl named Caroline, she immerses you into her sound.
7. Kyoto – Phoebe Bridgers
Recommended by: Alice Sukhostavskiy
This is a very calm, chill and low-key song. It’s relaxing yet upbeat. Even though the song’s lyrics are darker and display quite a few emotions, the song itself is bright.
8. Ordunun Dereleri – Altin Gün
Recommended by: Evan Gattuso
The Amsterdam band Altin Gün returns with an alluring track, “Ordunun Dereleri,” that broadens their exploration of Anatolian rock and Turkish psychedelic folk to include 80’s synth-pop and dancefloor excursions. The single is a reimagining of a traditional Turkish folk song, a classical love story about two doomed lovers, featuring down-tempo beats, majestic synths, and Erdinç Ecevit’s longing vocals of unrequited love. Watch the gorgeous music video here.
9. Night Crawling – Miley Cyrus (ft. Billy Idol)
Recommended by: Alexa Kushner
“Night Crawling” is one of the best songs to come off of the highly anticipated Miley Cyrus album, “Plastic Hearts.” It is literally electric and transports you back to the 1980’s. Cyrus and Idol’s voices blend perfectly on this track and it is a song that will make you feel pumped up and ready to take on anything. Rock is truly Cyrus’s strong suit and Idol helps emphasize that with his mysterious vocals added on the track.
