New music Monday: January 18, 2020
Each week the content writers for KCPR.org are going to publish a playlist containing a new song recommendation from each of them.
1. Girl Like Me (feat. H.E.R.) – Jazmine Sullivan, H.E.R.

If you enjoy smooth R&B songs, this song is perfect for you! “Girl Like Me” is a relaxing melody that combines Jazmine Sullivan’s and H.E.R’s feminine voices beautifully. Since this song is about feeling a sense of loss or abandonment after a breakup, listening to “Girl Like Me” is perfect if you just want to relax and go deep into your feels.
2. Deal With It – Ashnikko (Ft. Kelis)

Ashnikko has been making music since the release of her first song “Krokodil” on SoundCloud in 2016 and she gained recognition after her song “STUPID” went viral on TikTok. “Deal With It” was released on a three song EP along with a music video that incorporates pirate aesthetics and futuristic visuals. This break up anthem screams female empowerment and not putting up with less than you deserve.
3. Waiting on a War – Foo Fighters

This newest single off of the impending Foo Fighter’s album, “Waiting on a War” is the band taking a mellow turn. The track is backed by simple guitar strumming and what sounds like a violin. Despite its peaceful sound, the song embodies the hopeless children face looking into the future and is inspired by lead singer Dave Grohl’s personal experiences.
4. A Song for the Drunk and Broken Hearted – Passenger
Recommended by: Sophia Pattison
This song, from the new album just released by Passenger, is the title track. It is somewhat reminiscent of a song that could be by The Cure. It is sweet and feels like a great listen for a calm Sunday morning.
5. Chemtrails Over the Country Club – Lana Del Rey

This is the first glimpse of Lana Del Rey’s new album, “Chemtrails Over the Country Club,” and it gives us a hint of what to expect in March. With this new single, we see a more mature Lana as she celebrates her eccentricity while sticking to her roots.
6. Davinci – Honeyboys

San Luis Obispo outfit Honeyboys dropped a new single “Davinci” on Friday. Like their earlier releases, “Davinci” is an exuberant mood-booster, bound to brighten anyone’s day. Their glossy concoction of jazz, rock, hip-hop, and bedroom pop is like a gust of warm wind on clear nights in SLO.

Honeyboys are a local SLO band that remind me of Rex Orange County. “Davinci” in particular is a great song to vibe to on a drive to the middle of nowhere with the windows rolled down.
7. Solid Heart – Gia Margaret

Gia Margaret’s latest single, “Solid Heart,” was fully released on January 12th – a few days after a BandCamp release. Margaret’s second studio album, “Mia Gargaret” was released in 2020 and is perfect for a slow, easy Sunday morning. It is very meditative, calming and peaceful. Her debut album, “There’s Always Glimmer,” was released in 2018 and beautifully blends folk-sounds and electronic pop.
8. Close to You – Dayglow

This song is the newest single from Dayglow and features bouncy synths to make for a perfect track to drive at sunset to.
9. Dimension M2 – Stereolab

The 90s’ premier avant-pop band have announced a new compilation of previous rarities, dropping this bouncy track alongside it. It’s driven by their signature synth leads, bells and punchy drums, with a surprise B-section to keep things alive in typical Stereolab fashion. Here’s one to take a mellow cruise into the long weekend with.
10. Bad Boy – Young Thug ft. Juice Wrld
Recommended by: Alina Jafri
This song features the late Juice Wrld and makes us reminiscent of him. Both his and Young thug’s verses flow smoothly with the track. The beat is rhythmic and has a signature tune that can play in your head for hours.
11. I Know The End – Phoebe Bridgers
Recommended by: Alice Sukhostavskiy
This song was released as a part of Phoebe Bridgers’ album “Punisher.” “I Know The End” has sad and mellow tones that showcase Bridgers’ voice well. Even for those who aren’t fans of Bridgers, I highly recommend this song.
