Local winery reimagines traditional wine-tasting experience
Camp Cass at Cass Winery allows visitors to try activities like archery, axe throwing, painting and electric bike riding through the vineyard — all while sampling the estate’s wines.
Camp Cass counselor Chase Alderete takes honor in his role of leading the adult-sized fun on the vineyard. In his 13-year-long career with Cass Winery, Alderete has worn many hats and played many different roles. But he feels that leading activities at the vineyard is best suited for him now.
“The goal is to offer something different for guests to be able to do while they are in the area,” Alderete said. “If you are in Paso you’re either eating or drinking. Those things aren’t bad. Those things are great, but sometimes it’s nice to have a little change.”
The winery’s commitment to diversifying extends beyond activities. According to Alderete, plans for the next five to seven years include expanding into hard cider production and opening a tequila distillery.
The unique offerings are already attracting international visitors. Katherine Pyke, traveling from the United Kingdom, chose Cass specifically for its archery program after seeing it listed among local wineries.
“My uncle recently passed, and whilst he was alive he made a comment about toxophilus, which nobody knew what that was. It turns out it’s an archery expert or enthusiast,” Pyke said. “When we saw that this winery did archery, it was like a sign.”
Pyke and her traveling companion, Mary White, included the winery stop as part of their three-week West Coast tour, citing the setting, sunshine, hospitality and wine as highlights of their visit.
