On Feb. 20, Welsh indie folk artist Cate Le Bon performed at SLO Brew Rock to perform songs from her newest album, “Pompeii.” This show was the perfect emotional roller coaster; Cate Le Bon’s eccentric style and entrancing voice kept us wanting more.
To kick off the show, the opening artist, Mega Bog, played an emotionally intimate and eccentric set. Her newest album “Life, and Another” is described as “dense but full of whimsy and romance, pulling in strains of folk, jazz and chamber pop to marvel at all the odd little wonders of the world”. Her ethereal performance was defined by her breathy and delicate voice perfectly reflecting the nuanced, tightly woven metaphors in her lyrics.
Cate Le Bon opened with “Dirt on the Bed”, which felt like being haunted in the best way possible. The first half of the show felt tender and emotional since Le Bon played songs like “French Boys” and “Pompeii”. These are songs that touch on themes of, longing and she conveys these emotions in a sophisticated and tasteful manner.
The second half of her performance was more upbeat, signified by dancing from the audience. During her tracks “Moderation”, “Harbour” and “Remembering Me”, the audience was getting into the music. Her genre-defying rock act is truly unlike any other, with soft guitar riffs and saxophone harmonies in the background.
Cate finished off the show with “Sad Nudes”, from her 2019 album “Reward.” The song shared a similar eerie feel to the beginning of the setlist.
