‘FAST’ hosts jewelry making event

A Cal Poly club brought in local jewelry makers to help students learn this craft. This club, Fashion and Student Trends, known as FAST, held this jewelry making workshop on Feb. 22.

The jewelry makers that FAST hosted are members of Cal Poly Sustainable Fashion Club. Senior business major and statistics and psychology minors, Camille Heathcock, was one of these workshop leaders, as she is also a local craft vendor and creator.

“It’s so fun to like spread the love and show people how awesome jewelry making is and how easy it is too,” Heathcock said.

This was one of multiple recent events from the club, along with their fashion fair on Feb. 25 in collaboration with Front Porch and the Sustainable Fashion Club. 

Junior architecture major, Lauren Shirley, who is FAST’s fashion director, helped plan these events. She says that this quarter having workshops and creating community is their goal.

“We have like weekly, or bi-weekly, workshops to kind of like bring more people involved with the club and get to make little things,” Shirely said.

Coming up for FAST, the club will be hosting a machine sewing workshop, a costume social and their annual spring quarter Fashion Show.

Senior experience industry management major and FAST co-president, Joanna Perlas, notes the importance of workshops like their recent jewelry making event for students to connect and learn new skills from their peers.

“Obviously you can find like tutorials on youtube and stuff for how to make jewelry things, but sometimes it just helps with the tactile learning and being able to do things hands on. I think that’s really important,” Perlas said.
