Crafting connections with the Fiber Arts Club

Cal Poly’s student-run Fiber Arts Club is home to those that enjoy working on a variety of fiber-based crafts such as knitting, crocheting, embroidery and sewing.
The Fiber Arts Club was created in fall 2022 by psychology junior and club president Gretta Andersen. She created the club right after arriving at Cal Poly as a freshman.
“During lockdown and quarantine, I got super interested in crochet, and I was like ‘I wonder if Cal Poly, like the college I’m going to, has a club for this!?,’” Andersen said. “So I searched through the 250+ clubs and there wasn’t anything, which I was really surprised about.”
While club members usually work on personal projects during general meetings, they’re also working on a club blanket which will be made up of all different kinds of granny square styles and different yarn textures.
Child development freshman Eliana Freidman has enjoyed her time so far in the Fiber Arts Club.
“I really like that it’s a space to have social interactions while working on crafts,” Friedman said. “Because I think in college a lot of the time I’m like stuck doing homework or I’m like ‘ok either I have to do homework right now or i’m like gonna do my social interacting’ and I lose time for crafts and things I really enjoy doing.”
Friedman attends the club to work on wall hangings using embroidery thread and patterns that can be found online.
Aside from general meetings, the Fiber Arts Club also hosts different events such as movie nights and charity events. Recently, they held a crochet workshop at the Cal Poly Plant Conservatory.
