Cameron Jung
Graduation Year and Major:
December 1998 and Nutritional Science
Position at KCPR:
I was one of the Promotions Directors and an Air-Talent. I DJed at KCPR back when they allowed students from any college on campus to come and be a part of the station. I’m pretty sure I was the only Nutritional Science student there at that time! Prior to my time at Cal Poly, I was involved with a zine in the Bay Area, so my interest in music was pre-existing and the hunger to broadcast my favorite music was in my blood.
Favorite part about working for KCPR:
When I was at KCPR from 1996-1998, things were pretty loose. We had heaps of fun with lots of parties. It was a great group of people to be involved with. My time at KCPR was the highlight of my time at Cal Poly. We were encouraged to be creatively free. That was truly my favorite part.
I grew up in SLO County, so it was also inspiring to be a part of a radio station that, as a teen, I would purposely drive to SLO once a week just to tune-in to the punk show. Back then, the radio signal was only strong within SLO city limits.
One of my favorite moments at the station was when I featured one of my friend’s bands, Black Velvet Elvis, on my show. I had them come to the studio and play a set, which wasn’t exactly allowed without permission, but it happened. Turns out the live set was not exactly appreciated by the class below the station, who was taking their final early during dead week on a Tuesday morning. Whoops! I got a call that morning by Duane who was the station’s advisor. I had no idea that the station had an advisor until that day! It was all about living and learning!
Where do you currently work and what do you do?
My main work now is as a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist in a private practice, here on the Central Coast. I also have a side hustle of live DJing out and about in the local community with SLOGrrrl and in collaboration occasionally with other organizations, such as Soul Dust Productions. I also hosted The Massive Cure Power Lunch with FlutterByCam on 97.3/107.9 The Rock from 2014 – 2018.
How did, if at all, KCPR help or prepare you for your career trajectory?
Overall, I’d say that my time at KCPR helped me become a stronger speaker when speaking to large groups and it also helped me learn to collaborate better with others. There is also a good boost of confidence that comes when you broadcast yourself once a week on the airways. Being a part of the station also helped keep my passion for enjoying life alive, which might be the biggest benefit ever! Those are some serious life skills!
