Cal Poly Celebrates National Transfer Student Week

Every third week of October, the National Institute for the Study of Transfer Students puts on National Transfer Student Week, and Cal Poly’s Transfer Center is not missing out on the celebration.

The five days are filled with events made to increase awareness of campus resources and put transfer students in touch with their advisors and the “transfer community,” as Cal Poly Transfer Center Coordinator Heather Domonoske puts it.

“We hear a lot from transfers like how do you find friends or the quarter system is so fast paced in my classes, so really at the end of the day my priority is how to help transfers find community,” Domonsoke said.

Amir Zubaedi, a student assistant at the Transfer Center, said having that community makes all the difference.

“Just having the Transfer Center I think is really important as a transfer student because, although you are still a part of the Cal Poly community, it is an inherently different experience coming in as a transfer student”, Zubaedi said. “And so, acknowledging that and acknowledging that different path to get here I think is really important.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom recently signed several bills making the transfer process from community college to a university easier, and with Call Poly moving to the semester system, that process is becoming less challenging. 

“We hear that that is the one of the biggest stressors for transfers, adjusting to the quarter system,” Domonoske said. “So the thought of not having to navigate that when you are adjusting to upper division courses, adjusting to a new campus, adjusting to living in the SLO area, like that to me was the best news for transfers in that email.”
