A glimpse into the Rec Center’s early morning spin class
At 6:45 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the Cal Poly Recreation Center Studio One spin room,
fills up with 34 eager students, staff and locals ready for a ride. Barb LeMoine, the spin
instructor for the Breakaway Spin class, finds her early morning classes so special.
“I love my class,” LeMoine said. “I have hands down one of the best classes I’ve ever had. I
always enjoy coming out to Cal Poly because the energy is so good. How could you not want to
be on campus all day long? It just feels good.”
In her classes, friends show up together or get to know each other by showing up each week.
“Here’s what I love,” LeMoine said. “It’s an individual sport, but it takes a village like we’re all
in there rooting for each other because cycling is part of the cycling class is challenging.”
Charlie Ward, computer science senior, has attended spin twice a week for the last five weeks.
He relies on friends in the class because he knows he will see familiar faces and get a good
workout.
“It’s hard for you to find motivation to get out of bed at 6 a.m. to go workout,” Ward said. “And
so kind of like having friends that go and do work out at 6:45 in the morning is kind of making
motivation happen for me.”
