Swipe Right Ep. 1: Where to meet people in college

Sick and tired of dating apps? You’re not alone. A 2019 study by the Pew Research Center found that 48% of adults in the U.S. ages 18-29 have used dating apps. These apps can be useful, but some prefer the initial in-person connection. If you are one of these people and don’t know where to start, I have a solution. In an attempt to be the next Carrie Bradshaw, I’ve compiled a list of possible places in San Luis Obispo to meet your next date.
Concerts
Are you a music lover? Try checking out a show at the Fremont Theater, SLO Brew Rock, or a local band’s concert to connect with people who are just as passionate about music as you are. Also, the music acts as a built-in conversation starter. Bonding over music is a classic way to get to know a person, and concerts offer a live setting to do just that.
Coffee shops
Coffee shops are often used to enjoy a latte and study, but they can also serve as a perfect place to meet new people. Muster up the courage to ask what someone’s go-to order is. Not only will you get an idea for something new to try, but you have the opportunity to take that conversation to new heights. Plus, someone’s coffee order often says a lot about a person!
Class
Whether it be a major class, a GE or a free elective, class offers the chance to meet people through study groups, group projects and seating arrangements. I mean, who doesn’t love a class crush? Ask for help on a tough homework problem, or set up a study date to keep the connection going.
The Library
Grab that open seat at the third-floor communal tables and start chatting with the person next to you. Also, make the Julian’s line a bit more exciting by talking to whoever is near you. The classic line of asking to borrow a pen or a phone charger could also be extremely successful at the library.
The dorms
Calling all freshmen! Don’t overlook the possibility of meeting someone in the dorms. My roommate and her boyfriend met in Tenaya Hall and have been together for over a year (and might I add that they are one of the cutest couples I’ve ever met). Head on down to the common room, cook a meal or play a game and see what it has to offer.
Campus clubs
Clubs are used to bring together people with common interests, and they help students meet people that they might have never crossed paths with. Why not see if there’s anyone that catches your eye in your club?
The bars
A classic college love story, the bars create the right atmosphere for chatting with new people. According to a 2017 Statista survey, 27% of 5,421 surveyed coupled adults met in a bar. Who says you can’t bond over a beer?
A blind date party
Throw a blind date party by getting some friends together and finding dates for each other. This way, dates are vetted by your friends first! Set up games to play, provide drinks and snacks, and if all goes wrong, at least it’ll make for a memorable story.
There are many other ways to put yourself out there and give dating a try in the real world. Get creative, the worst that can happen is you’ll have a story to tell!
