Student Opera performs ‘Spring Acts’

Students and visitors saw a mix of colorful costumes and powerful voices on Saturday, April 15, with the Cal Poly Student Opera Theater”s “Spring Acts.” The production was directed by music professor Amy Goymerac. 

“The goal of this program is to give our singers and the music department the opportunity to have performance experience and to participate in this artform of opera that they don’t often get to really fully see the full scale of,” Goymerac said about the program. 

Made up of 32 members, the Cal Poly Student Opera Theater performed 13 scenes from nine different operas, which they have been preparing for since fall quarter. Goymerac says that there is a somber stigma around opera that she aims to combat with performances like this one. 

“Opera often has this stereotype that its super dramatic or super sad — it’s not wrong, but the scenes that I selected for this performance are all comedies, and I just wanted it to be super accessible for the students and for the audience to just jump in and have a good time,” she explained. 

The cast included students from across all types of majors, ranging from freshman to graduate students. Sophomore business administration major Alexander Miller got involved in the Student Opera Theater through his involvement in Cal Poly’s Chamber Choir. 

“I hope the audience got to appreciate how much work and effort we put into.”
