How Cal Poly students are preparing for Coachella

Students are getting excited as the first weekend of Coachella starts this Friday, April 14 to 16.

Coachella is a three day music festival in Palm Springs that happens every year for two weeks in April.

Junior communications major, Rachel Liberman, is going to Coachella this weekend for the first time.

“I’m most excited to really just like, hang out with my friends,” Liberman said. “We’re all camping, so it’s going to be really fun to see some of my favorite artists.”

The lineup came out in January announcing more than 150 artists performing. The headliners this year are Frank Ocean, Blackpink and Bad Bunny.

“I’m excited to see Frank Ocean,” Liberman said. “Obviously that’s a classic because I feel like I’ve just grown up listening to his music. It’s just really good songs that I’ve always been listening to.”

Coachella regulars have noticed the lineup is slightly different than in years past.
Junior marine sciences major, Callie Crumpler, is going for the sixth time and says she sees a shift in the music genres.

“This year is a little different because they are doing a lot more different artists than they usually do,” Crumpler said. “I would say normally there’s like more rap artists, but I feel like they kind of went more on like the indie pop route this year.”

Apart from the music, Coachella is most known for the unique and creative outfits people wear.

Liberman and Crumpler have both been planning outfits for weeks ahead of time.

“There’s not really a set type of clothing you’re supposed to wear,” Crumpler said.
Everyone kind of just freely expresses themselves, but this year I went for a more chill vibe.”

For the first time, those not attending are able to livestream all six stages on youtube or on coachella.com

“The food is great, the company is great,” Crumpler said. “The music makes it even
better and it’s a great escape from reality.”
