DRC tram offers students a helpful service

The Disability Resource Center, or DRC, located in Bldg 124, is the direct line to accommodations. Students utilize the DRC for temporary or permanent disabilities. 

One aspect of the DRC that many people don’t know about is the ride service. Tram is a department within the DRC that helps students get between locations on campus using golf carts and vans.

Emily Bakshi, a sophomore at Cal Poly and past DRC tram user, is grateful for the accommodations she was able to receive.

“[I] broke my ankle last year pretty bad,” Bakshi said. “And so for all of spring quarter I was on the tram getting driven around all my classes.”

Tram department student leads Cristina Golubovich and Edward Collinson encouraged students in need of tram services to apply.

“I think one of the biggest misconceptions about tram is that people don’t think that they can use it if they’re not physically injured,” Golubovich said. “I think that’s something that a lot of people on campus don’t take advantage of. If you have any sort of disability that can get you some sort of accommodation at the DRC, there’s a chance to probably get rides from the tram department.”

Both Golubovich and Collinson find their job rewarding and are grateful to provide services for students in need.

“Dropping them off at class or picking them up after they’ve just taken a really difficult midterm,” said Collinson. “Seeing that appreciation on their face and, you know, seeing that it really means something to them is definitely very rewarding.”
