Cal Poly’s new library tents

At the start of this academic year, the Cal Poly Kennedy Library shut down for renovation, while the university admitted the largest class of new students yet. 

Instead of a traditional building and shelves lined with books, students have access to temporary study tents around campus with QR codes to find the resources that are used to be available.

The new campus tents come equipped with foldable chairs, tables, power outlets and fans to keep cool in the recent heat.

Software engineering sophomore Xiomara Alcala said she used to be a regular at the library.

“I’m really sad that it closed because that was my spot.” Alcala said. “I would literally stay in the library and I’d be there up until 3 [or] 4 a.m.”

Although the library is expected to be closed until 2025, spaces like the University Union are offering accommodations. They are now open 24 hours and have added additional seating. 

When the library reopens, it is expected to have several upgrades like a two-story 24-hour hub, more classrooms and air conditioning. 

In the meantime, Cal Poly management is trying to improve the tents. Cal Poly library Project manager Carla Brown said these library resources are spread around campus. 

“We actually are working on the installation of HVAC units.” Brown said. “We have identified places in Crandall, in Building 26, we have partnered with ASI so we’ve spread out the same services throughout.”

The library tents have no planned departure date and are expected to be on campus as long as needed.
