Cal Poly’s most anticipated artists of 2023
The start of the new year brings a slew of announcements for new music and tour dates for artists in the forthcoming year. Although the Cal Poly student body has an eclectic music taste, there are some releases and tours that the student population is most anticipating. Here’s what Cal Poly students and KCPR staff are most excited for this year.
2023 is already set to be a great year of music starting with Mac DeMarco’s newly released album “Five Easy Hot Dogs,” Paramore’s “This Is Why” and the start of boygenius’ album “the record.”
It is no surprise that Taylor Swift is a largely anticipated artist, given her success as the first musician to make a billion dollars solely off of her musical career. While her touring ceased during the COVID-19 pandemic, her 2023 tour will consist of four recently released albums: “Lover,” “Folklore,” “Evermore” and “Midnights.”
With the success of her singles that were released last year, INJI is an artist to watch out for in 2023. Her latest single titled “THE ONE” has left fans hoping for new music and possibly even an album in the new year.
With the release of their album “Second Brother” in 2021, the band Próxima Parada has been gaining traction and expanding their fan base. They went viral on TikTok after a user posted a video using their song “Musta Been A Ghost.” Fans of the band can watch them perform in Santa Barbara at the Lucidity Festival on April 8.
For those more interested in the rap scene, Drake is planning a world tour for his album “Her Loss” with 21 Savage. Not only did Drake announce his summer tour, but he also hinted that he will be releasing a solo album later this year.
While there are many artists releasing albums and touring this year, KCPR’s staff picks for most anticipated albums and tour dates are The Backseat Lovers, Lana Del Rey, Arctic Monkeys and MUNA.
After their album “Waiting to Spill” released just last year, The Backseat Lovers will be touring in America starting in April, following a European tour.
Lana Del Rey is trending for two reasons this year: her album “Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd” is set to release on March 24, and the only billboard marketing the album is in the hometown of her ex-boyfriend, Tulsa. With marketing this targeted, we can only hope for a personal album full of emotion and romantic tragedy.
Indie rock fans have been anticipating the Arctic Monkeys North American Tour ever since they dropped their 2022 album “The Car.” Tour dates for their sixth album will begin in early August and last throughout the fall season.
Not only is MUNA set to perform at Coachella this year, but the group is also set to tour worldwide starting in March. With Lorde and Taylor Swift scheduled to play at a few of the concerts, this highly anticipated tour is already sold out at several locations.
