Alvvays – “Blue Rev”
Canadian indie-rock band Alvvays will release their third studio album “Blue Rev” on October 7, five years after the release of their previous record, “Antisocialities.” The four singles released ahead of the record are both characteristic of the band’s typically energetic sound and are a re-imagination of their style.
King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard – “Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms and Lava,” “Laminated Denim” and “Changes”
The known and loved King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard have a bit of a unique release plan for the month of October. They are releasing three records through their own label: “Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms and Lava” on October 7, “Laminated Denim” on October 12, and “Changes” on October 28. This trifecta is following the band’s April “Omnium Gatherum” album. The first and only track released ahead of October is a 10-minute funky and off-beat track titled “Ice V.” KGLW is a music production machine, and isn’t showing any signs of slowing down.
Surf Curse – “Magic Hour”
Surf Curse seems to be taking things in a pure rock direction for their fourth studio album “Magic Hour,” dropping October 7 via Atlantic Records. Although frontmen Nick Rattigan and Jacob Rubeck have spent time working on other projects, most notably Rattigan’s Current Joys, the band will reunite for this release. Tracks “Sugar,” “Arrow,” and “Lost Honor” discuss themes of love and recklessness and adhere to the band’s rugged and barbarous sound.
The 1975 – “Being Funny in a Foreign Language”
After a departure from their classic sound, The 1975 is officially back and better than ever, fans believe, with their upcoming record “Being Funny in a Foreign Language,” out October 14 via Dirty Hit. Two of four singles released ahead of the album, “I’m In Love With You” and “Happiness,” put an all-puns-intended happy spin on the band’s original sound from their 2012 debut era and contrasts the usual heavy themes the band discusses through their music.
Arctic Monkeys – “The Car”
Four years after their last release, Arctic Monkeys will make their return to the rock scene on October 21 with the release of their seventh studio album “The Car.” Two singles released ahead of the record, “Body Paint” and “There’d Better Be A Mirrorball,” reinforce the band’s status as one of the legendary alt-rock bands of the 21st century.
Dry Cleaning – “Stumpwork”
Alt-rock band Dry Cleaning will be releasing “Stumpwork” on October 21, following up their 2021 record “New Long Leg.” The three singles released ahead of the album, “Gary Ashby,” “Anna Calls From The Arctic” and “Don’t Press Me,” all showcase Dry Cleaning’s iconic spoken word style – but also experiment with new songwriting techniques.
Drugdealer – “Hiding in Plain Sight”
“Hiding in Plain Sight,” the new record by the abstract and experimental Drugdealer, will be released on October 28 via Mexican summer. The work of Drugdealer frontman Michael Collins on singles “Someone to Love” and “Madison” showcase some of his most eclectic and diverse sounds to date. The San Luis Obispo community received a visit from the band at SLO Brew Rock in September for a funky and flashy performance.
Spoon – “Lucifer on the Moon”
Shortly after the release of “Lucifer on the Sofa” earlier this year, Spoon will release a companion record titled “Lucifer on the Moon” on November 4, produced by Adrian Sherwood. Spoon has already released two of the reworks called “reconstructions.” The synthesizing reconstruction of “On The Radio” preserves the alt-rock vocals of Britt Daniel but adds an element of flowy psychedelia, almost sounding like an entirely new song.
The Smashing Pumpkins – “Atum”
Three decades into their career, The Smashing Pumpkins haven’t slowed down just yet. Their upcoming record “Atum” will be released in three parts – culminating in a 33-song rock opera beginning November 15, to be completed in April of 2023. It was described as a follow-up to the pinnacle album “Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness,” returning the band to their 80s rock roots.
Weyes Blood – “And in the Darkness, Hearts Aglow”
Natalie Mering of Weyes Blood will make her highly-anticipated return to the music scene with her first release since 2019, “And in the Darkness, Hearts Aglow,” on November 18. Mering has released one single ahead of the album titled “It’s Not Just Me, It’s Everybody,” a characteristically Weyes Blood song that discusses anonymity, uncertainty and being understood.
